The circle of life

This image is the epitome of Africa. The lion king, patrolling his kingdom looking out for enemies and protecting what is his. Like in the movie Lion King, he is accompanied by the birds that notify him of intruders and danger.

As the King roams through the fields, he shakes up the grass - disturbing insects who then become prey for the birds. The birds are prey for other predators, who die and become the grass. The antelopes eat the grass..

Tusks and details

Elephants are my (Emma's) favorite animals. Their massive bodies, their large ears, their muscled trunk, their ivory tusks - elephants are very special creatures and I can look at them for ages when we are on safari.

By zooming in on the trunk and tusks, two defining features of an elephant, you become very aware of the details and leave the rest to the imagination. The grooves in the ivory, the hairs on the trunk. Maybe you never realized that, yes, elephants also have hair! The black and white image further brings out the wrinkled skin even more, making it almost touchable.

Brotherly love

These two lions form part of a special band of three big brothers called the Salas boys. When you see them, you are instantly in awe of their strong physique and beautiful manes.

Lions share strong family bonds and they protect each other. These Salas boys form a powerful "coalition" and they will fight other males to rule lion prides.

This picture shows another side of these fierce creatures, expressing their love and strong social bond.

Lookout

The cheetah is one of the most sought after animals in Africa. With its mesmerizing spots and its enormous speed the cheetah is a sight to behold.

Due to their speed, cheetahs mainly hunt on open terrain. Before they start their hunts, they find high ground (a termite mount for instance) to scan the plains for suitable prey.

Seeing a cheetah on a mount gives an enormous rush. Firstly for seeing the cheetah altogether. Then, because of what is about to happen...

Giants on an aching planet

If you think about Africa and its animals, one of the first animals that come to mind is the elephant. Their massive size, their tusks and their tough skin with beautiful details make these prehistoric looking animals so majestic. Unfortunately, they are still very much under threat by poaching. Add to this the fact that with increasing human population, their territories get more and more scattered. This leads to many risks of human-wildlife conflict, making extinction a very real threat for the African elephant.

Having an elephant walking in your direction is something all people hope to experience while on a safari. When we were on an early morning safari in Amboseli National Park, we stopped to look at these two beautiful elephants. They slowly moved our way and walked straight toward us. Amboseli, especially when we were there, was experiencing one of the longest droughts recorded in the area. The strong winds whipped up the sand quite high, leading to an ominous mist. Against this 'misty' backdrop, the elephants give me a scary picture of a dry and dusty world in which animals are slowly disappearing.

In Formation

This image is a symbol for patience in wildlife photography. Which for me (Emma), is a trait I was not naturally blessed with. To get these three perfectly in line was only something I could only wait (and hope!) for, since the beauty of wild animals is that they are unpredictable.

Eventually, the last one stopped eating from the acacia tree and, all of a sudden they looked in the same direction. Their tails swinging in the air. While it was not the original formation I had in mind, it still made a beautiful shot.

Black rhino's are notoriously shy. On top of that like bushy areas, which makes it hard to spot them. And when you do they will likely move away from you. As a result, we have so many pictures of a rhino's behind!

For this photo, we turned off our engine and sat still in the car for a long time. Since rhino's have poor vision, if you keep really quiet it might not see you and get close. He was slowly walking past us and chewing on leaves, until he probably smelled or heard us and turned around. That's when we quickly snapped this head-on shot of this big beautiful tank.

Black rhinos are critically endangered nowadays, so every encounter with them makes us humble people - grateful to still enjoy their presence.

African Sunset

Africa, and Kenya in particular, is well known for it's open grasslands and beautiful animals. Not as well known, but at least as beautiful, are the African sunsets. The huge open grasslands enable stunning sunsets, especially with animals against these sunsets.

With this particular sunset, we were able to enjoy a group of giraffes having dinner in front of the setting sun. We were thrilled when one of the giraffes moved away from the bush and walked right in front of the sun. The the sun behind the giraffe gave it a beautiful glow.

This was definitely one of the most beautiful sunsets we have ever seen.

Looking Back

Lions are widely portrayed as kings in pop culture. Their golden-orange color, the way they wear their manes as crowns and the power these big cats possess, make them seem royal.

Not only do they seem royal, they sometimes seem to have wisdom only they possess. In one of our favorite parks, Ol Pejeta, we encountered this lion as he greeted his pride. The pride lions were scattered across the plains on which we saw them.

When he had greeted all pride members, he stopped for a moment to look back at where he came from. He stood there for several seconds, looking in the distance as if he knew something only he could know. We can only imagine the wisdom his life and his fights have brought him.

Olarro

Leopards have always been and probably always will be a special animal for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. We are no different here. Their beautifully rosetted fur, their elusiveness and the sheer power with which they climb trees with their meals, make them some of the most mesmerizing animals.

If you know their power, their intense gaze becomes only more exhilarating. It seems as if they can look straight into your soul. Looking a leopard straight in the eyes, can bring chills down your spine.

We spotted this leopard, Olarro, in the Mara Triangle, a very well managed private part of the Masai Mara. He was having lunch in a tree and we were fortunate enough to witness this. After his meal, he licked his paws to remove the victim's blood. Leopards do this, to avoid other predators smelling the blood and being attracted to them.

During this grooming session, he suddenly stopped and gave us this stare down. We were amazed by the intensity of his gaze and after looking him straight in the eyes, my hands were shaking for several minutes. Fortunately, I was not shaking when taking this picture.

Olarro was so close, that this picture can be printed in an enormous size. However, to have such an intense look so large on your wall, is not for the fainthearted...
